Ok, so last night, a show came on that I have been waiting to see for awhile. It's called "Sex: The Revolution", and it's basically the history of sex in our culture. Even though it is obviously biased, and told from a very "worldly" point of view, the facts were still very accurate. Growing up a child of the 90s, I always wondered how sex went from being taboo in the 1950s, to not only being accepted as a form of "love", but being encouraged in today's culture. It was very eye opening to see how quickly our culture can turn. I wonder if things would have any been different if the christians had showed these "hippies and druggies" what real Love is instead of condemning them all to hell by using scripture as a weapon. As the documentary went it on, it showed the progression of sex, which was then fueled by psychedelic drugs all the way through the 70s. Then coming into the 80s it described the AIDS epidemic. This part was extremely interesting because every since I can remember, there is not a lot we know about the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, except how it is transmitted. However, back then, when people first began dying from this mysterious disease then dubbed "GRID", or "Gay-Related Immune Deficiency", people freaked out. There was actually an article in time magazine that read "AIDS: No one is safe." People thought you could get AIDS just by being in immediate vicinity with one of the "infected." There were countless interviews, discussions, and debates. All of which involved at least one well-respected Pastor. This "religious monument" always said the same thing, that gay people brought this on themselves, and AIDS was God cursing them. Now I am not going to get into that subject, but regardless, is that what we are called to do? Point out God's judgement and say "That's what you get." That's absurd. Any time the people of God(which is everyone) are suffering, the church should on the front lines, showing compassion. Jesus didn't pass the leper and say "Wow, you must have really pissed my dad off!" He did what no one else did, he not only stood in the vicinity of him, but he touched him. A person people deemed an outcast, and unworthy of human interaction, and Christ made direct contact with him. It kind of reminds me of our relationship with Christ. Here we are, sinful, spoiled, completely undeserving of everything but death, and yet Christ still comes to us...
