What the eff?
Ok, so there is a growing trend among girls from tweens to 30somethings, regular people to celebs, and I feel it needs to be addressed. What do you think when you hear the words "role model?" Do you think, tragic death, shallow material wealth, depression, and loss of respect for one's self? Me either, yet there are a large group of women who, dare I say, idolize, Marilyn Monroe. "What the eff?" Idolatry is bad enough, but if you are going to idolize someone, at least pick someone who led a fulfilling life(like Tupac, or Mister Rogers). Marilyn Monroe (or should I say Norma Jean. (I would have changed my name too if I had 2 first names)) had a rocky childhood, with a mentally unstable parent who committed suicide, and several family members that met the same fate. She later went on to be an actress who was never taken seriously, but eventually broke into the lime light because of her looks and "ho-ish" demeanor. When she did land big roles, her co-stars said she was unbearable to work with. She admitted that most of her life she had been a drug addict who battled clinical depression, and at the end of it all, she either committed suicide by overdosing or(as conspiracy theorists would say) she was murdered because of her illicit affairs. Either way, her life pretty much sucked, even she thought so, yet people constantly quote her(in interviews, on myspace, and in away messages on AIM!) and strive to be like her. So the next time you hear some girl speak of Miss Monroe with a tone of admiration, CALL THEM OUT! You know who idolized Marilyn more than anyone? Anna Nicole Smith. Her life, from beginning(a jacked up childhood) to end (overdose) was exactly like Norma Jean's, and look how that turned out. It really says a lot about a culture when "the perfect life" is nothing but the vanity of fame and a few bucks in the bank. Peace.
PS...The amazing portrait was painted by Claire.
